Unaccompanied Solo for Violin

Thomas Joseph

About this work:

Unaccompanied Solo for violin was composed while studying the works of Kaija Saariaho, Jonathan Harvey, Pierre Boulez, and a myriad of other composers as an introduction to post-1950s music study. Non-tonal music has its own sense of form, thematic development and structures. Saariaho's music has a language and character of its own that exemplifies a form of expression that only she can portray. When making the alteration from tonal to non-tonal music, a composer has to modify what they like to do tonally and find a way to express it non-tonally. This fully-developed solo piece for a virtuosic performer is my second formal attempt at my own sense of form and development regarding non-tonal music. A lengthy and rhythmic pizzicato section contrasts with the opening material and provides a fury of meterless and syncopated madness.
