Affectionate Objects

About this work:

 Notes for Affectionate Objects:

Affectionate Objects is a three-movement work modeled after the 18th-century baroque sonata.  As with the baroque sonata, each movement of the piece is unified by one or two ‘moods’, i.e. ‘affections’. Compositionally, the work is structured around a pallet of pitch and rhythmic patterns.  These patterns are carefully repeated and altered. In so doing, I attempt to achieve a balance of serialized and intuitive musical materials.

The first movement: (Praeludium), begins with a series of flourishes by the alto saxophone and later by the piano. This movement is rather ‘fugue-like ‘in nature.

The second movement (Intermedio), begins stately but abruptly changes to a playful, quicker contrasting section.

The third movement (Adagio-Finale), once again begins as if it were a prelude, but much like the first two movements it suddenly becomes livelier, and in this case ‘gigue-like in nature.
