RAINER MARIA RILKE POEMS: Three Songs for Voice & Violin

Priscilla McLean

About this work:

The three Rainer Maria Rilke poems are:  1. "Eingang" (Initiation), 2. "Die Laute" (The Lute), and 3. "Der Nachbar" (The Neighbor).  The Text is both in German and English, translated by Priscilla McLean. "Initiation" is about an evening vision of a large black shadowy tree, and the spiritual renewal it inspires in the poet.  "The Lute" is an erotic poem about the lute being played by the artist and its likeness to a past lover.  "The Neighbor" ("Fremde Geige, gehst du mir nach?") describes the mournful haunting melody of a lone violin who seems to follow the poet, who by its heavy tones dooms and yet saves those who hear and are affected.
