Impromptu Variations and Toccata

Thomas Joseph

About this work:

Impromptu Variations and Toccata is a solo piano work comprised of two movements: one being variations and the other a toccata. The set of variations begin as a transcribed improvisation and maintains that character throughout. It is always moving forward and ever-changing into something new. One could describe it as a theme and variations not blatantly obvious to the listener since its construction is based on a tiny motivic and intervallic fragment. The Toccata utilizes more specific melodic material from the opening theme and expands the harmony and rhythm into a frenzied movement. The latter movement harkens to the composers of its inspiration such as Bartok, Prokofiev, Monsolov, and Stravinsky.
