FIRE & ICE

Priscilla McLean

About this work:

Either tenor or bass trombone can be used.  An ossia part is written for the bass trombone in a few locations, when the tessitura or high notes may be troublesome.  Otherwise, just the trombone solo is written.

The piano has two performers.  One person plays on the keyboard, while the assistant pianist performs on the harp, or strings of the piano.  "Soft" preparations (ones not imbedded in the strings, but added and removed at the time) are used by the assistant for more percussive sounds and glissandos.  Also, plastic picks are used for plucking strings.  The preparations are simple and undamaging to the piano, played as instructed.
