Lost Waltz 2014

Elizabeth Brown

About this work:

Lost Waltz 2014 was arranged for flute and string quartet in 2014 for the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival, for a performance by flutist Linda Chesis and the Momenta Quartet. The original Lost Waltz, written in 1997 and dedicated to Orpheus flutist Susan Palma Nidel, was commissioned for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with funds from the Greenwall Foundation and the Heathcote Art Foundation. Several themes (one is a fragment of a familiar children’s song) appear and recede in layers, moving in and out of waltz-time. As the instruments shadow and echo each other, sometimes the sound wavers, like an old 78 record or an image seen under water.

In the attached recording, Elizabeth Brown plays flute with the Momenta Quartet, in a performance at Montclair State University on 10/16/14.
