The Beating Heart of the City

Ned McGowan

About this work:
Sound installation created in collaboration with set designer/robot artist Roland Olbeter.  Called the ‘Beating Heart of the City’ all the sound comes from the Hohenzollern bridge leading into Cologne Central Station.  Of course, lots of beautiful train sounds but also local musicians and plenty of voices from the throngs of people going on this bridge.

Its the voices of real conversations which attracted me very much because they communicate the stories and emotions of the people. To record them I walked around with a hidden recorder, pausing next to people talking to each other. No proper names, personal insults or terrorist plots were revealed but plenty of honest emotions of people with their families and friends.
