Instrumentation notes: Florébius was written for the Eusebius Duo. The piece has expressive features associated with the characters Florestan (extraverted) and Eusebius (introverted), which, in Schumann, can appear as separate and distinct passages or intertwined. Here also, the music moves across a spectrum of mood/quality, one within the other, one lurking behind the other, ready to take center-stage - and thus the title of the piece… This alloy of expression is reflected also in the language mixture, crossing over between traditional tonal harmonies and modern ones.
