Sonata

Stan Grill

About this work:

An inquiry from cellist Juan Aguilera Cerezo got me thinking about attempting a sonata for solo cello. I had avoided writing solo sonatas for strings in the past, discouraged by the difficulty of sustaining interest across a multi-movement work for a single instrument. After all, only Bach gloriously succeeded at this. Despite all of the efforts since then by many great, great composers, none (at least to my ears) have managed to do so entirely successfully. So, hence my hesitation. But, here it is. For whatever it’s worth.
