About this work:
Written for guitarist Luiz Mantovani, this intense 3-movement piece is inspired by a moving short story by Nathan Englander from his collection, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, about a group of Hasidic Jews in World War II who make the miraculous mistake of boarding a train full of circus performers instead of one bound for the concentration camps. The music is tonal, but chromatic, energetic, wailing and soulful, with a quote from a Yiddish folk song towards the end and woven into the music elsewhere. Moderate difficulty
