EXPANSIONS for Woodwind Quintet

Harold Blumenfeld

About this work:
Short but eventful woodwind quintet in which melodic subject is expanded and contracted laterally. Compact neo-classic / neo-polyphonic piece. Composed in early attempt to avoid general woodwind quintet sound of rattling of dry bones. And to avoid patness of contemporary fugues which harp all too obviously on identically repeated fugue subjects....... >former pub: MMB Music, now closed... Published by COMPOSER: blumenf@wustl.edu Score $15. <<<...... Sound Bite from recording by York Quintet of Queens College, City Univ of New York...... Composer knows only two quintets which surmount wdwnd quintet aridity: the quintet of John Harbison, its palette enlarged by incorporating alternate instruments into the mix; and of course, the delightful, 'grosse' "Kleine Kammermusik" of Hindemith. Oases in a dry land...... The sheer brevity of my little quintet have afforded it some immunity from the problem.
