Pacita's Lunch

Theodore Wiprud

About this work:
On the day President Marcos died, I found myself at a lunch with three Filipina women, in the home of the one who made paintings and wall hangings and sculptures obsessed with the brooding figure of the now-deceased tyrant, images that surrounded us as a wild conversation of reminiscence and speculation and superstition and hilarity unfolded, punctuated by our hostess's shrieking laugh. It seemed the table levitated and carried me into a wholly alien and disorienting sphere. Immediately after I began to compose Pactia's Lunch, which finally found its ideal form as a virtuoso piano piece. Jeanne Golan premiered the work at Greenwich House is New York.
