Fiuggi Fanfare

Sally Reid

About this work:
Fiuggi Fanfare was commissioned by the city of Fiuggi, Italy and Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica expressly for the Gli Incontri al Borgo symposium in Fiuggi in September 1996. The work received its premiƩre performance during the Fiuggi Festival by the Donne in Sax quartet and Franco-American saxophonist Paul Wehage. The symposium included four other commissioned works by composers from Spain, Norway and Italy (2). Each received a silver medallion (designed by the Italian artist Orafa Rosito) from the mayor of Fiuggi. The versatility and vivacity of the saxophone ensemble is explored through swirls and whirls of bright, festive notes contrasting with the heralding fanfare passages. The recurring lyrical gestures are supported by an insistent rhythmic accompaniment and sudden dynamic contrasts. The ensemble sets the spritely festive tone for the festival activities to follow. * The Fiuggi Fanfare is also available in versions for saxophone quintet and for concert band.
