Gyrospace

Sally Reid

About this work:
A fantasy originally realized for quadraphonic tape, Gyrospace explores spatial effects and relationships in an enclosed soundscape. The various themes are presented as a sound mosaic, and vary from the satirical homophonic sections to the mirrored image motives of the closing section. The work is intended for playback in a fairly large space to fully exploit the motion and delay within the composition and the combinations which result from the natural echo of the performance space. This composition was the first extended study by the composer (1979) exploring the capabilities of the early monophonic analog synthesizers. Sound elements were combined through splicing and multi-track recording techniques. Spatial modulation is an important element in this work, which now exists in a stereo version
