Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra
Waddy Thompson
About this work:
A virtuoso concerto composed for Pamela Frame, now professor of cello at Eastman. The first movement begins with a lengthy "upbeat" in which the cello mixes with the other instruments before sweeping into the first theme. The movement end in a blaze of brass glory, leading to a transition to the very slow, very soft second movement. The third movement also continues without pause. It is characterized by a playful first theme shared by the cello and timpani. (See "Concerto for One Cello" for a reduced solo part of the first movement.)
