Symphony #2

John E. Uth

About this work:
My Second Symphony was written for a community orchestra with a moderately sized wind section and no percussionist in regular attendance. This encouraged me to write in a tighter perhaps more intimate style than my other orchestral and it simultaneously gave rise to a richly complex contrapuntal texture ( note the fugues in the last movement ). The work is in three movements the second of which is a slow movement which embodies a scherzo in the middle. Each movement begins with the same nine note theme B C B E C B C B A but, with each entrance, this group of notes is introduced in a different harmonic context. The lengths of the movements are approximately 10, 9 and 7 minutes in duration.
