Night Journey

Bruce Adolphe

About this work:
Night Journey is music of dizzying, shifting pulses and ever changing instrumental timbres. After composing it and trying to find an appropriate title, I was reminded of watching colors and shapes dart by the window of a train during a night journey. Inside the train all is still while outside is a whirl of activity. This experience, familiar to us all, is a vivid (and I hope helpful) metaphor for the rhythmic, textural, timbral world of Night Journey. The piece was premiered by the Jacksonville Symphony in 1988 and also exists in a wind quintet version which was premiered by The Dorian Wind Quintet.
Year composed: 1987
Duration: 00:12:00
Ensemble type: Chamber or Jazz Ensemble, Without Voice:Woodwind Quintet
Instrumentation: 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 Bassoon, 1 Horn in F
