To a Locomotive in Winter

Greg Bartholomew

About this work:
Greg Bartholomew composed "To a Locomotive in Winter" in 2001. A setting of a poem by Walt Whitman, this work for unaccompanied mixed choir is from a set of three choral settings of 19th Century American poetry on a winter theme. The companion pieces are "A Rainy Day," with text by John Brainard, for women’s chorus; and "A Country Boy in Winter" with text by Sarah Orne Jewett, for men’s chorus. The poem "To a Locomotive in Winter" was first published in 1876 in Whitman’s collection entitled, Two Rivulets, and was later incorporated into the 1900 edition of Leaves of Grass. The composition received its first reading by the Gregg Smith Singers in July 2001 at the Adirondack Festival of American Music. The Oregon Repertory Singers presented the premiere performance of the work in concert at the Oregon Bach Festival on July 6, 2002. Seattle Pro Musica has selected the work for performance on their 30th Anniversary concert entitled "Best of the Northwest."
