Interleavings

Paul A. Epstein

About this work:
Written for Charles Abramovic, the five pieces in this set explore the process of interleaving: the interspersing of two or more melodic patterns. (A-B-C interleaved with x-y will give AxByCxAyBxCy.) The first, fourth, and fifth pieces are also studies for a larger project inspired by Joan Mitchell’s Grande Vallée suite of paintings. The second piece employs a 13-note pattern interleaved with itself at different distances. The third piece interleaves the pattern of Steve Reich's Piano Phase (possibly the first piece built entirely on a pattern constructed by interleaving) with that of his other great phasing piece, Violin Phase, in a set of mini-variations.
