57: 4/5/7

Paul A. Epstein

About this work:
Please contact the composer directly for performance materials. 57:4/5/7 employs a pattern of 57 notes that exhibitS a fractal-like quality I call self-replication. The pattern is replicated when one takes every 4th, 5th, or 7th note. These numbers — all of which are prime to one another — determine the structure of the piece, a continuous web of pitch and rhythmic sequences, all with different periods of repetition. Superimposed on this rigorous isorhythmic structure is a freely composed series of variations in such musical elements as key or mode, register and articulation.
Year composed: 1998
