Prelude And Fugue

Kevin McCarter

About this work:
The prelude, predominantly gentle in character, begins with a melodic phrase in simple homophonic style. Its lyrical figures gradually become more active and the texture grows more polyphonic until its energy crests like a wave and flows to a quiet conclusion. The fugue is a more playful movement. Its subject contains several short rhythmic figures. These are featured one by one in successive sections of the fugue, giving each section a distinctive rhythmic profile. The complete subject returns -- with the added energy of a bit of stretto -- to round off the fugue. Either the prelude or the fugue may be performed separately if desired.
