Sonatine

Kevin McCarter

About this work:
The sights and sounds of summer provided a stimulus for the musical materials of this three movement work. The opening of the first movement is a response to watching light filter through leaves as they shimmered in a gentle breeze. Later figures were influenced by bird calls. The second movement opens with low, sustained tones, contrasting with the brightness of the first movement as forest shadows contrast with beams of sunlight. The final movement brims with energy. It takes a reflective turn at the end, recalling ideas from the first movement as if remembering them in a new light.
