Hermit Thrush

Elizabeth Brown

About this work:
Hermit Thrush, for solo shakuhachi, (performed by the composer) was written in spring, 1991 at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where the clear, ethereal song of the hermit thrush was often heard at dusk. It’s modeled after traditional shakuhachi Honkyoku, with phrases the length and shape of a breath, and subtle variations in color and pitch. Hermit Thrush is part of Vox Inhumanae , a set of monologues for 3 instruments with otherworldly vocal qualites (all played by Brown): shakuhachi, theremin, and dan bau (traditional Vietnamese monochord).
