Last Words

John Fitz Rogers

About this work:
Last Words is a setting of a James Merrill poem of the same title, taken from his collection, "The Fire Screen." Initially, three friends, a soprano, guitarist, and oboist had each asked me to write them a piece; but having come across the Merrill poem, I thought the combination of instruments would reflect ideally the timeless and ancient qualities of the text. The work received its premiere on the New Music/New Haven series at Yale University in March 1991.
