Elegy for two Volins and Viola

Lawrence Moss

About this work:
"Elegy" was written for Paul Zukofsky and two members of his quartet.. It is an elegy for my brother Conrad, felled by a sudden and unexpected heart attack in 1969. The four movements are: Adagio espressivo e sostenutop, Fantasy, Song (based on a well-known tune of Fats Waller, one of my brother's favoritres) and Cadenzas.. Stephen Brookes wrote in thw Washington Post: "...the next and certainly strogngest work on the program, Lawrence Moss' 'Elegy'. Written in 1969 after the suden death of his brother, the piece opens with an attack so savage, it feels like flesh tearing open. Slowly, painfully, with tentative gestures and sustained harmonic passaages, a fragile, brittle tissue is woven over the wound. Altogether an extraordinary work, finely played ... It proved a tough act for Luciano Berio's 'O King' to follow". "Elegy" is recorded on CRI SD307
