About this work:
This wind octet was originally commissioned and premiered by the Dutch Ensemble Contacten, but was heavily revised in 1999 and beautifully performed by the Wellsley Composer Conference Ensemble, Efrain Guigui conductor. Writen for the "Octandre" instrumentation, fl, clar, ob, bsn, tpt, tbne, hn, and db, the premise of this work is to only use a few, very particular, extended and extreme techniques; allowing each technique to develop and clash with techniques of other instruments. Its vibrancy comes from juxaposing these different techniques, while also finding a strange sense of stability in their extreme nature.
