CRUSH

Nicholas Chase

About this work:
CRUSH is comprised of an A-B-A1 form and repeatedly uses a specific set of numeric ratios and values as its basis. The A section consists of 60 permutations of a dissonant chord perceived while meditating on the universal resonance of AUM. The continuously articulated F natural is a representation of the non-dissonant chord perceived during the same meditation, for which there is no audible sound. Section B is a rhythmic exploration of certain sacred Hindu ratios utilizing the same pitch material as the A section. The rhythmic permutations in this section are governed by the body of the proportions from the Prajapati, a numeric diagram illustrating the numbers of the cosmology of life. The A1 section is improvisatory, utilizing again the same pitch material. In this section the performers are left free to explore their feelings, resonances and dissonances with the performance, the moment and the audience.
