Iterations for Piano and Orchestra
John de Clef Piñeiro
About this work:
Iterations for Piano and Orchestra is structured, as suggested by its title, as a series of explorations (or iterations) for piano and orchestra. Each exploration departs from a six-note motto that is prominently reiterated (somewhat altered) several times throughout the piece. The thought was to use the motto, figuratively, as a springboard for the various explorations (or jumps).
Aesthetically, the work presents the contrasting interplay of tension and release by using the motto as a common point of departure, then proceeding to a different level of complexity with each jump, until the final jump. As with Symphonia Minima, the music's underlying structural aesthetic is based on achieving la grande ligne through the aggregation of motifs that are implied by what has gone before.
