Capriccio for Solo Flute

Edward P. Mascari

About this work:
Capriccio for Solo Flute (2002) This composition, commissioned by flutist Laura Vincent, is in ABA form. The A sections feature a motive which is expanded and varied in a variety of ways. The central B section is characterized by a jazzy swing melodic line which is interspersed with an um-pah type of accompaniment (reminiscent of the stride piano style). The language is tonal and the mood is upbeat.
Year composed: 2002
Duration: 00:03:00
Ensemble type: Solo instrument, non-keyboard:Flute
Instrumentation: 1 Flute
Instrumentation notes: the extended technique of singing-at-pitch-while-playing is incorporated into two of the swing sections of the piece. It is also helpful to think of the left hand accompaniment pattern used by stride pianists in the sections that surround the 6/8 swing lines.
