Sonata for Cello & Piano

Bernard Crane

About this work:
The use of older standard musical forms has long appealed to me, like a mountain that calls out to be climbed by virtue of its very existance. The concept of using a pre-existing form, into which I might pour my own musical expression and give it my own unique signature, seemed gratifying. The first movement of Sonata for Cello & Piano is in "sonata-allegro" form. In envision it as an extended dialogue between the cello and piano, like two old friends with their commonalities and their disagreements. As they share their musical expression of the material, they grow and learn from each other and are both changed. Neither wins -rather, it is the power of their unified conviction that seals their success.
