PraiseMaker for Chorus and Orchestra was commissioned by the Cincinnati May Festival, with funding from the Otto M. Budig Foundation, in celebration of its 125th anniversary, receiving its world première on May 25, 1998. Mr. Singleton and his collaborator, the writer and filmmaker Susan Kouguell, promised the Festival and Mr. Budig a piece that would be “universal, secular and celebratory.” Ms. Kouguell added in a note to her text that the “most universal [idea] in celebrating an event is memory.” This concept leads back to the “praise singers” of Africa, who serve as the oral historians and celebrants of tradition in their societies.
