About this work:
This work was composed in response to the events of 9/11 and was premiered June 15, 2002 at The State Street Church, Portland, Maine, by The Maine Gay Men's Chorus, Miguel Felipe, Artistic Director. The text is by Walt Whitman.
The spoken texture which opens and closes the piece reflects a fundamental theme of Whitman's poem: Peace. The words used in this spoken texture are words for "Peace" in six different languages--some spoken in and around Afghanistan, and some in nearby countries (The languages are Farsi, Arabic, Hindi, Hebrew, Pashto, and Urdu).
