Crest

Tayloe Harding

About this work:
A short, exuberant work commissioned by noted hornist/composer Paul Basler, CREST (2000) is a work dominated by a single main melody. It also exhibits some mono-thematic construction typical of many of the composer’s solo works, and this feature suggests the work’s form. About CREST’s dominant trait, the highly thematic melody, the composer writes: "I had been hearing this periodic tune in my head since the late 1970’s and had never encountered a real chance to use it in a serious and/or mature composition. It does appear in a student jazz work from that time, but I always liked the nature of the tune and wanted to be able to use it in just the right solo-type piece for just the right player."
