Pamlico Legacy

Tayloe Harding

About this work:
Subtitled "Macro-Variations on a Modified Chaconne," Pamlico Legacy (1985), is dedicated to the memory of the composer's father Charles T. Harding (1901-1984). A reflective melody serves as the chaconne and is presented in an atypical series of long variation-like patterns throughout the piece. The variations are atypical in that they are lengthy, not separated from one another in a characteristic manner, and in some cases, feature unusual harmonic juxtapositions of the notes from the melody. It is for this reason that the work is referred to as a modified chaconne. The moods of each of the variations are purposely sentimental in nature, but remain dramatically different from one another.
