About this work:
A three movement work commissioned by the Chicago Saxophone Quartet, the Quartet for Saxophones (1990) features a wide variety of moods and sonorities. In the two outer movements, fast patterns of melodic material are combined and changed in ways reminiscent of minimalist techniques, but owing much to more traditional gestural development. The first movement profiles a more expansive treatment of small patterns and mottos than does the third, which is based primarily on a one measure long sixteenth-note pattern. The slow movement is typical of many of the composer’s middle movements, largely lyrical and reflective in nature. A soaring melody in the soprano saxophone dominates, but is also paired with an alto duet and a contrasting tenor/baritone duet as well.
