When Satan Weeps

George Spicka

About this work:
Stopping for the briefest of rests from its interminable labors in its Stygian world, the Lord of Darkness allows itself to ponder the situation. A loud gasp, a glistening tear. It is overwhelmed by total misery and settles even deeper into the festering muck. Amid the turmoil of its thoughts, anger grows. A tiny coal, at first gently fanned by the wind of gloom, continues to grow and soon spreads out of control. Suddenly it leaps up, shakes its many fists and curses all of creation for eternity. As the irresistible fury mounts, it begins to whirl about, faster and faster, flailing a multitude of limbs about wildly. If it could only shriek, from its mouths would come roaring banshee screams, more terrifyingly horrible then the agonies of all wars that ever were, or are to be. Yet even this relief is denied. Quickly, everything is caught up in the swirling madness as the wrath continues beyond anything that is humanly imaginable. Freedom finally happens when its insurmountable rage ignites the infinite, twisting vortex, shooting raging hell-fire that burns everything in its Universe. Its energies spent in this cathartic release, it settles upon the desolate plains, only to be swept by waves of despair. It asks, “Who will have pity on Lucifer?” Tears flow to the ground, their wetness joined by a steady rain of offal from the heavens. Contemplating its eternal damnation once again, its own internal fire begins to smolder anew. The pain grows until it becomes unbearable. It is up. It is off.
