Poème

Ernesto P. Pellegrini

About this work:
Publisher: Arizona Recordings As the title indicates, the work attempts to evoke a sense of nostalgia associated with romantic poetry — — but is done in an abstract way. The lyrical motive [0 1 2 5 6] which is heard at the outset, played by the soloist, is the motivating force of the entire work. The motive, derived from a Neapolitan folk song (“La monacella” [“The Nun”]) is developed throughout in a very rhapsodic manner. Even though the overall structure appears to be ABA in form, it seems so only because the return of the opening refrain is at a certain point reintroduced making this moment a recapitulation of what has preceded. Due to the chamber-like forces of the ensemble, many coloristic aspects of the orchestration are continuously manipulated, which add to the evocative quality of the work.
