Daydream

Pamela J. Marshall

About this work:
A mysterious, introspective piece written over a left-hand (mostly a-minor) ostinato with a peaceful dreamlike quality. Quiet melodic fragments bild, become more insistent, then fade away. Although the notes are not technically hard, the expressive nuances and ritards make it a different kind of challenge for the young pianist. The meter is mostly 6/8 but occasional shortened measures let the music surge forward and keep the player counting. Daydream was selected as a contest requirement for the Renee Fisher Foundation piano competition in Connecticut. A student in the Junior Division performed it at their winner's concert in May 2002.
