Your Acquaintance, for Clarinet at Electronic Media
Jack W. Stamps
About this work:
This piece started as a way to document one perfect evening in Austin, Texas. The first movement samples ambient noise form a variety of different bars and clubs. The clarinet melody throughout the first mvt. is a series of variations on its final, un-altered statement. The tape/clarinet exchange in the 1st mvt. symbolizes first time conversations with strangers and the struggle to be mutually understood in a loud place. The clarinet and the tape are attracted to each other.
The second mvt. is a dance and samples a guitar from an ethnomusicological collection from Indonesia. Certain intervals were chosen to be more prominent against the guitar loop, such as the major 7 and minor 3rd.
The 3rd mvt. is a rondo based on a melody I wrote and recorded many years ago. The last mvt. is intended to take the listener home to wind down after a long night of socializing. The inside-piano glisses reinforce the roots of the 2nd movt. chords lingering in the minds of the participants.
