Labors Lost and Loved
Frederic Trobaugh
About this work:
I guess you could say that Labor's Lost and Loved was my first commission. Carol Nies came up to me one day in the summer of 1994 and said, in passing, “If you want to write a piece for me to conduct, then make sure you make it for winds.” I think that was probably the last she thought about it until, some months later, I told her that it was ready. She has conducted it many times, and each time she discovers more in it. She is able to bring out more delicacy and power than I was aware I had put in.
