De IJzer

Timothy J. Brown

About this work:
De IJzer is a musical work which uses the poem of the same name by Johan DeMaegt. The poem was written in 1918, published in a collection "Letters from the Yser Front." This is a simpler work from a larger set of World War I pieces, but may be performed independently. The work uses quartal harmony and the Bb dorian scale. It opens with unaccompanied voice. The strings, oboe, and voice form one musical layer, while the piano is a separate layer.
