Catalytic Concerto

Rob Smith

About this work:
Catalytic Concerto was premiered at the Univ. of Texas at Austin in 1993 by the University of Texas at Austin graduate saxophone quartet. The title of the work is a pun on the term catalytic converter, which is a part of the exhaust system of a car that alters the emissions by chemically combining them with an enzyme in the converter so they are less harmful to the environment. Much like this process, I am combining two types of material (a set of harmonies and a contrasting scale) in this piece so that they are completely intertwined by the end.
