About this work:
In early 2004, Mars was being invaded. Three space craft, Europe’s ill-fated Beagle and NASA’s twins, Spirit and Opportunity, were landing and scooping up Martian dirt for analysis. Meanwhile, back on Earth, I stuck my nose in the book that introduced the red planet to me as a child, Ray Bradberry’s Martian Chronicles, and relived those wonderful stories where Mars was paradise, with canals and ancient, beautiful cities, and the Martians were, in turn, hostile, condescending, and paternal. So when it came time to give this solo horn work a title, Dusty Red Sphere evoked both the real Martian landscape with its dust storms, as well as the fictional dust collecting in the homes of Bradberry’s ancient, dead civilization.
