Starry Messenger, an eight-minute piece for brass quintet, was composed in 1980-83, then re-examined and completely revised in 2003. In keeping with my on-going fascination with astronomy, "Starry Messenger" is a translation of the title of Galileo Galilei’s initial astronomy text, Sidereus Nuncius, published in 1610, which contains the line "I have seen stars in myriads, which have never been seen before, and which surpass the old, previously known, stars in number more than ten times…"
