About this work:
[performed here by Joseph Bertolozzi, piano, from the recording "Songs & Waltzes"] This material was written as birthday, Christmas and bar mitzvah gifts for little friends of mine (not so little anymore!) for them to play on their instruments (flute, trumpet, piano, etc.). In using the letters of their names that correspond to the names of the musical notes, an ancient technique known as "soggetto cavato" or "carved subject," where the the notes of the musical subject matter is carved out of the honoree's name, the gifts were further personalized, and part of the game was to see if one could hear the name as it appeared. The renditions here are simple improvisations upon the melodies.
