Street Suite

Allan Crossman

About this work:
Street Suite was written in 2002 and dedicated to the Montreal musician, Vytautas Bucionis. Each of the Suite’s four pieces portrays a neighborhood where the composer formerly lived. Dolores Street is a favorite San Francisco neighborhood – a colorful, vibrant international crossroads. It was here that the rhythmic idea for this piece was first heard. Wilson Avenue, in Montreal, was a residence for many years and the site of many emotional encounters, from dark to light, all deeply felt, and the source of many lifelong memories. Grant Street in Berkeley has remarkable light and year-round natural fragrance, particularly from cedar and eucalyptus. There is a relaxed and contented quality here (the melody), and, beneath that, an urban intensity/complexity (the harmony). Avenue des Rapides looks out over Montreal’s Lachine Rapids, where the St.Lawrence River rushes over a special rock formation to produce the famous rafting course. The music reflects the rhythm and trajectory of the Rapids, and further the vigorous rush of the neighborhood’s humanity.
