Duet No. 1 for Viola and Double Bass

Michael Hopkins

About this work:
This piece was originally composed in 1993 as a piece for viola with piano accompaniment. It was reworked in 2002 for double bass and viola. The idea for the piece was a metaphorical musical journey. The piece begins with a unison (octave) melody in C major and then begins a journey, eventually returning to the unison C on the last note of the piece. As the journey unfolds the instruments travel in perpetual motion through several key centers, eventually coming to rest at the end.
