Kinetic Portrait No. 4

Michael Hopkins

About this work:
This is the string orchestra version of my work, "The Metamorphosis" for Full Orchestra. The piece is in two main sections. A slow, adagio introduction begins with all the instruments in unison, slowly pulling apart. A four-note motive is first presented in the cellos and basses, and passed through the orchestra as the lament gradually builds in intensity. The second part is a fast, dance-like Allegro that alternates between 7/8 and 2/4 meter, creating an 11/8 groove. The opening motive can be heard in a transformed state. The grotesque dance is interrupted by a solemn chorale section. A brief recapitulation leads to the final “metamorphosis,” as the music of the entire opening adagio is presented, but in a strikingly altered state.
