Sleeping Man

Jenece C. Gerber

About this work:
Original text and music. Written in response to the passing of Lou Harrison, the piece is a heartfelt elegy for the loss of this inspiring personality. The text is loosely derived of the myth of Ariadne (which is also represented in "Ariadne's thread" by Lou Harrison), and was written mere hours after learning of the composer's death. The vocal part, which is applicable for all voice types, though designated for mezzo, requires some facility in leaps of ninths and larger and a small amount of sprechstimme. The premiere performance at the University of Akron was held in the fall of 2003, and was performed by the composer, Jenece Gerber, (mezzo) and Joyce Elliott, violin.
