Sacrosanct Floccus for Clarey

Michael Enright

About this work:
One of my earlier compositions, the premise of this was to restrict the opera to 6 notes for the majority of it. An interesting fact is that the main theme occurs in 33/16 time. This is considered an 'unusual' time signature, and other composers at SIU like to point that out whenever the opportunity arises. I devised the introductory idea on my guitar, and it just so happened that the rhythm I played, if I were to fit it as one motive per measure, was in 33/16. What's the big deal? What do they know? They're just a bunch of tree-huggin' hippies. So, there are basically two main motive/themes. They appear separately, then combined in one theme. There are various performance instructions which include the use of vocal/percussive effects. The title came from 'words of the day' in my MSN browser. Clarey is what Danielle Tindall calls her clarinet, and I just think that's cute. So I used it.
